Had an interesting conversation with my younger two about purpose today. Before we started devotions I just asked them what their purpose in life was. I shared that when I was younger I loved doing theatre and performing so being in a music field was God’s (or my) purpose for my life at that time. When I became a mother God changed my heart to help me see great significance in bringing up my children in a godly home. After we adopted I knew God was teaching me that helping the parents of wounded children was now my purpose in life.

For me, purpose is the reason I get out of bed each morning.

S said she felt that hers was to be the best kid she could be. After talking through it she also knows that she can be a help to other children that are hurting and traumatized through difficult beginnings.

M, well, he looked at me like I had two heads. He basically parroted what S said, but using a future tense. As in, “when I get better I can help other kids.” Yeah, buddy, you can, but what is your purpose today? Why did you get out of bed? Silence. What are you doing with your life? Do you really want to reach 50 and realize you squandered the gift of life that God gave you? Yes, God can always redeem our past and use those things we yield to Him. But time’s a’wasting for my son.

Hard, penetrating questions that I hope will reach his heart, or at least his thought process. What about you? Do you have a purpose in life? What gets you out of bed despite the chaos?
