  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 4 tbs heaping cocoa
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla

FOR FROSTING

  • 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts optional
  • 1 3/4 stick butter
  • 4 tbs heaping cocoa
  • 6 tbs milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 lb. powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Grease and flour 10x15 glass dish.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar and salt.
  • In a saucepan, melt butter. Add cocoa and stir together. Add boiling water, allow mixture to boil for 30 seconds, then turn off heat.
  • Pour over flour mixture and stir lightly to cool.
  • In a small bowl pour the buttermilk and beaten eggs together. Add baking soda and vanilla.
  • Stir buttermilk mixture into butter/chocolate mixture.
  • Pour into 10x15 glass dish and bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.
  • While cake is baking, make the icing. Melt butter in a saucepan. Add cocoa, stir to combine, then turn off heat.
  • Add the milk, vanilla and powdered sugar and stir together. Pour over warm cake and sprinkle with chopped walnuts.

Notes

Since I never have buttermilk I pour just a bit less milk and add a small amount of white vinegar to sour the milk.
I forgot to mix the walnuts in with the chocolate frosting so I sprinkled them on top instead.
