Quick tips for making Sweet Milk White Bread:

  • Make sure you use sweetened condensed milk and not evaporated milk. This contributes to the tenderness and soft texture.
  • You can leave the finished bread on your counter but the bread loses flavor and texture after a few days. Freeze it sliced and you can take out one piece at a time.
  • Don’t be afraid to try this recipe again if your first loaf doesn’t turn out. Sometimes it takes a while to get the knack of it, especially if the conditions in your home change – heat, humidity, air, etc.

Do you love homemade white bread as much as my family? The kind that disappears in the middle of the night when you leave it out on the counter?

Yep, me, too!

I found this bread recipe for Decadent Sweet Milk Bread and had to try it.

The first time I followed the recipe exactly and made the dough in the bread machine and then did the braid. This time I wanted to see if it would work as a loaf and save me some time.

I’m all about making life a little easier and still tasting good!

I am seriously in love with my bread machine, but it’s a little quirky like me. The weather and humidity affect how the dough rises.

You don’t have to be a scientist, but you might have to spend a little time getting to know your machine. In other words, practice makes perfect!

I have found if I can check on the dough a few minutes into the cycle and see if it’s mixed well and has enough moisture, then the bread has a better chance of being pretty and tasting delicious!

If I need to I’ll add a few drops of moisture to the dough. Sometimes the bread machine does its thing and the bread bakes but it isn’t pretty!

This was an extremely easy recipe and it disappeared from my house! Homemade sweet milk white bread is especially great toasted with butter, cinnamon and sugar.

  1. Yum, great recipe, I love bread to be a little bit sweet, especially white bread, I’ll give this recipe a try 🙂

  2. Hi,this recipe sounds fantastic! I only have one question. Is this a one lb loaf or much larger? I have a Cuisinart Bread Machine and I have to add the size to any basic setting or it will not cook! Thank you so much!!

  3. Can you just use the bread machine for the dough cycle and then bake in the oven? If so what temp and how long would you need to bake it?

  4. I used this recipe but I put the yeast in the warm water first…then added the remaining ingredients. It turned out great tho…! I’ve made 4 loaves this week lol but I gave one to my sister! Needless to say everyone I know will get a loaf of Sweet Milk White Bread for Christmas this year!

  5. This is the best and easiest bread machine recipe! I make at least 3 loaves per week and it has never failed! Thanks so much for this great recipe!

    1. Thanks, Michelle. We love our bread machine but don’t use it as often since our kids have gotten older and most have left home. I’ll have to go make some for myself now!

  7. Hi Marty,

I am new to breadmachine . Have been trying a lot of bread recipes to get the right sweet beard. Of them all I found yours to be the best. The bread came out just right, moist and sweet. This recipe is definitely a keeper.

Thank you for such a wonderful bread recipe. I no longer will be buying bread from the store.

  8. Question…. With my bread Machine it said that everything must be heated up? Do I need to have the water around 110 and melt the butter or just toss it in as is? Thank you!

    1. Hi, Crystal. I’m so sorry I’m just seeing your comment. You’ve probably figured all this out! I updated the recipe to show the butter should be melted (although softened would be fine). I don’t warm the liquid ingredients, though. Hope you enjoy the bread!

  9. We are addicted to your recipe and are well into our 5th loaf now – and 2 more today.

Since we also make homemade pizza we have a variety of flours – prefer ’00’ whenever we can use it. And we are comfortable with making and using a starter. So those are the only modifications we are making. The ’00’ (very fine ground) should make these loaves very smooth. We’ll see 🙂

So I’ll whip up these 2 loaves this morning and see what the results are.

I will report back when we do a test – which could take a couple of days of endless nomming 🙂

    1. Hi, Kevin. I’m so excited that you’re enjoying the recipe! I wasn’t familiar with that flour but looked it up. I’d love to definitely know how it turned out!

  10. My family loves this bread. Can you make rolls out of it by using the dough cycle? If so can you freeze the rolls before you bake and if so what temp and time?

  11. My cuisanart bread machine just broke after many years of delicious bread , our favorite was maple syrup buttermilk bread . I want to buy a new bread machine but the reviews are so mixed from great to awful. What bread machine do you have??? I am desperate for a new machine as after a stroke I can no longer knead the bread!

    1. Hi, Kathie. My bread maker is a Sunbeam but I got it at a thrift store and it’s done just fine. I wouldn’t spend a ton of money until you know it’s going to work for you. Hope this helps!

  12. I love love your site. You have given many ideas that I have put in my home♥️♥️♥️♥️???☹️

  14. I swear I can smell that amazing-looking loaf baking from here. My hubby bought me a bread machine many moons ago and I haven’t used it for quite some time. Your recipe has got me watering at the mouth to dust it off and make one.

    1. Hi, Michelle. I haven’t made this recipe in a while either but I love my bread machine! Cooking for one is definitely different than for a family of 7!

Hi! Stumbled across your bread recipe as the one included with my cuisinart bread maker produces a dry and dense loaf! Just wondering what kind of yeast you use with this recipe? Instant dry yeast or active dry yeast? Thank you!

Love, love, love this recipe! We received a bread machine for Christmas and tried one of the recipes that came in the manual – meh. Found this recipe when surfing the net -OMG! Have made this recipe 3 times in the last 2 weeks! Do you have a similar recipe using whole wheat bread flour?

    1. Hi, Pauline. I don’t personally have a whole wheat bread recipe but you could always try a mix (whole wheat and regular) with this recipe and see if it worked. Let me know if you try it!

  17. I want to make a 3 lb loaf. Can I just double all ingredients and use my machine’s setting for 3 lb loaf?

    1. Hi, Tracey. You could certainly try but I’m not sure if the way everything reacts would change. Worth a try! Definitely let me know if you try it!

  18. The loaf certainly looked wonderful, and after resting for about 10 minutes the first slices were good. However this is where it went wrong, after about 45 minutes on the table the texture became very dense, it was crumbly and falling apart, the taste was incredibly bland. Now, I’m a novice baker this was actually my first attempt ever at using a bread machine so we need to factor that in. It very well could’ve been that I might have measured over and there was too much flour or something else ir maybe sonce i dont know this machine well i couldnt compensate for its particular peculiarities as ive heard many other bread machine iwners talk about. I don’t feel I can give an honest rating on this because of these factors. I probably will try this recipe again down the road when I’ve worked with this machine more.

    1. Hi, Kristen. I’ve found that even with a bread machine the dough can be tricky. Sometimes it’s the humidity or whether the flour might be too old. I’ve had lots of luck with this recipe so maybe try it again one day!

  19. For breakfast, I usually have milk white bread, and this Homemade sweet milk white bread looks even better than the bakery outside. Thank you very much for sharing this recipe.
